Midland Golden Retriever Club

Annual Breed Working Test

Sunday 24th May 2026

Held at Snowshill Gloucester,

by very kind permission of Mr Terry Booth

We were extremely grateful to our host to be able to run our Working Test on such exquisite land. The venue boasted parkland, plantation, a vast lake, small ponds, and tremendous woodland shade where all the vehicles could park and all the holding areas for the tests were also in the shade. We did have a few withdrawals due to the heat, but rest assured there were no issues regarding the heat.

Our judges did a fantastic job, the atmosphere was relaxed and happy with everyone enjoying the stunning venue. My judges for the day were Nigel Probert panel, Lisa Harris, Kate Green and Carolyn Jenkins, who all enjoyed the tests set by my Chief Steward Paul Green.

Our very generous Sponsors were:

SKINNERS DOG FOOD and AK GUNDOG TRAINING & EQUIPMENT.

I know it’s said time after time, that days like this would not happen without the helpers, but omg my team was second to none. Small in numbers, but bursting with enthusiasm and smiling faces, also enjoying the venue and watching the Golden Retrievers do what they were bred to do. My Dummy Throwers were; Paul Green, Ryan Pugh, Bailey Hind-Pincher and Kate. My Stewards were Jane Elder, Stacy Skitt, Jacqueline, Vivien and Debbie Campbell.

We had a handful of show bred Goldens entered, all from our training workshops and they certainly held their own with the working Goldens.

Thank you!

17 November 2025

The Midland Golden Retriever Club held its Novice breed stake, was held at New House Farm, Longhope,

Our Keeper Joe Smith , and his amazing team of Beaters ensured a wonderful show of bird , who were put on the ground by my amazing team of Guns: Tim Broad, Michael Hanman, Adrian Phillips, Will Sturgess and Angus Croft, the Club is very grateful to our Guns for their generosity.

My judges were Craig Perry, Helen Goodwin, Laurie Pittaway and Huw Jones who did a fantastic job, ensuring the day ran smoothly, and ensuring the trial was over in the early afternoon. Our sport relies on the goodwill of all the helpers, without them our sport could not go ahead. For that I’m so humbled by my amazing team: Chief Steward Sandra Onnens, Judges’ Steward Helen, bird markers, Marion Hanman, Sally Richardson, Charlie Elles and Scarlet Sentenbien, Game Carriers:  Chris Marchant and Sue Park, and my Red Flag Julia Hummersome and Andrew Wood.

Penny Gowland our MGRC Chairman , was in charge of hospitality, they fed everyone, with bacon rolls for breakfast and soup and cake for after the trial finished.

The only award COM, for Mary Palk' s home bred Tallygold Enchanter.

The Trial was dedicated to Denise (Den) Smith who sadly passed away earlier this year. Her friends kindly donated a cup for " Guns Choice" which was presented by her husband Nigel, to Nick Eden's home bred Ricanded Redoubtable.

The Midland Golden Retriever Club would like to thank our Sponsors of the trial, Skinners Dog Food and Mr Richard Mason and Llanbethery shoot.  On a personal note, I would like to thank Lucy Mixture for all her expertise in all things technical, and for being my " Wingman" thank you!

_____________________________________________________________

I couldn't have wished for a more amazing team, which enabled the trial to flow beautifully. The day started with breakfast of bacon rolls, tea and coffee for everyone. We then drove to the first drive, and after a short walk, we were greeted with a fantastic sight, a sweeping hill down to a marsh area and a pond.

The drive started with a constant trickle of Ducks, Pheasants and a few partridges; my team of Guns shot fantastically, getting the birds on the ground. The first drive was completed, with some very challenging Retrievers, which left 6 dogs in to go through to the 2nd drive. This drive was very different to the first, a small valley with a big bush-covered ditch; again, The Guns were amazing, getting the birds on the ground, which enabled us to complete the trial.

We all gathered back at the base, where, thanks to Penny and Freda had prepared hot soup, special Welsh bread, and homemade fruit cake and scones, which was a perfect end, in my opinion, just a perfect day.

The first winning cup was " The Mervyn Philpott Memorial Cup," kindly donated by Anne Falconer and Debbie Hughes. Mervyn's daughter was Greg Robertson, handling Westerkames Nature's Basic of Warpersmoss (his very first trial).

Second, Nick Eden handling Ricanded Redoubtable. The Guns Choice to Armand De Roover with Think Twice Zinger was presented with the Midland GRC plaque.

I would like to thank the Landowners, Joe, our keeper, his team of amazing beaters, my dream team of Guns, my lovely judges, all my helpers, and, of course, all the competitors who supported the trial.

Just a little note to finish, a massive thank you to Lucy Mixture for her help with all the admin for the trial.

Lucy Jenkins Field Trial Secretary MGRC
